Understanding
This week we are learning about the gift of Understanding.
This quarter we are focusing on the virtue of understanding. What would the world be like if we were all able to understand each other? A better place, of course. Understanding is a beautiful virtue to cultivate. It brings our minds into a state of focus. Understanding aligns our thinking and our feeling. It unites our hearts and minds. The more we try to understand, the more open we are to possibility. We don’t jump to conclusions. We use astute observation skills, we concentrate, and we resist distractions. We see the whole picture. As a result, we have greater insights and wonderful ideas. People around us feel noticed, respected and heard. Understanding requires work. It’s not quick and easy. It often involves the pursuit of conflicting perspectives. It requires us to look for missing pieces and to challenge ourselves. Dale Carnegie wrote that “…any fool can criticise, condemn, complain but it takes character and self-control to be understanding”. When differences and conflict arises, understanding helps us show compassion. We are more able to forgive the mistakes of others, and those we make ourselves. It means that we can use empathy and put ourselves in the shoes of the other person. We understand them and we are also more understanding of ourselves.
We listened to the song "Because You Loved Me" and "Wind Beneath My Wing" in class and talked about how understanding is a huge part of our lives and the relationship we have with others. We also talked about God and Jesus being the most understanding friend and the strongest relationship we should ever have.

This week I would like for you to:
1. Think about 2 people in your life that are truly understanding towards you. Write their names and describe why you think they are understanding.
2. Think about 2 people that are in your life that you do not understand and need to work at being more understanding of them. Meaning you need to be more tolerant of them and their ways of doing things. Write those names down and the steps you will take to become more understanding and tolerant of them and others.
3. Please answer the following: Why is understanding so important in relationships?
4. Lastly, what will you do this week to show that you can be more understanding of others?
I hope you all have a great week and I look forward to reading your posts. Please make sure you answer all of the questions.
1.I think my dad and my mom are truly understanding towards me. I think they are understanding because they know everything about me. They have lived with me my entire life and we don't really get in any fights and arguments. They love me with all their heart and I love them just as much.
ReplyDelete2. I think my sisters need to work on understanding me more. I also need to work on being more patient and understanding with them. That would help our relationship so much more. We also need to listen to each other better.
3. Understanding is so important in relationships. It is so important because you need to be totally transparent while in a relationship because you can't be hiding things from the other person in a relationship. Self control and understanding can help a relationship so much.
4. I will do a few things to show more understanding towards others. I will not jump to conclusions and stay calm. I will listen to everything they say and not assume. Lastly, I will also not think of other things or get distracted while trying to understand them.
1) Two people that are truly understanding of me are Ava Molli and Vincent. They truly understand what I am going through or make an effort to try to understand. They are always there to help me through anything that I might be going through.
ReplyDelete2) The two people in my life that that I do not understand and need to work on understanding are Grace (sister) and Regan (soccer goalie). For my sister I will work on understanding her mindset while she is doing things that are making me mad. As for my goalie I will work on being more patient with her and understand the struggles of being on a new team.
3) Understanding is one of the most important parts of a relationship. It is important because not everyone will be dealing with the same thing and you need to understand why they might be upset or mad. Understanding what others are going through is very important so you know how to act around the person and help them to get through whatever they are going through.
4) This week I will try to be more understanding in multiple ways. The first way is slow down and listen to what others are saying. The other way is by being respectful to my classmates and teachers because you don't know what is going on in there lives at the moment.
1. I believe that my friend Timmy Kapple and my brother Sam sort of understand me. Timmy understands me, because he listens and cares about what you are talking about. Sam understands me, because he knows what the dedication I have for sports feels like. Sam understands the ability to do whatever it takes to become better. Truthfully I don't think anyone truly understands me. We don't exactly know how someone feels about something. We may be able to relate to something that happened to them, but I don't think we can truly know how that has affected them, because people can't always describe what they are going through.
ReplyDelete2.I do not understand brother Gabe and my cousin Xavier. I will try to be more patient with both of them. I will try to listen to both of them and understand their problems. I will also try to remember that Xavier is only three and that he is still a little kid.
3.Understanding is one of the most important things in a relationship. If you learn to understand someone your bond grows. If you understand the person in a relationship, then you might become mean to this person and try guilt trip this person, or you might try to change the person.
4.I will do a few things to try to be more understanding to others. I will listen to people before I judge them. Even if I am not a big fan of someone I will still try to hear what they have to say.
1. 2 people in my life that are truly understanding towards me are, my dad and my grandma. These people are the most understanding in my life because, when I need help with something I don't understand or is bothering me they make an effort to try to help, even if it is tough and they don't give up. Individually, my dad is a very hard worker and the reason why I think he is so understanding towards me is because, anytime I have a problem or dont understand life in general, he gives good advice of how to handle the situation and shows me a better way of looking at life the way I see it. I think my grandma is another person who understands me better because, she doesn't judge or turn me down if something is bothering me, instead she does anything she can do to help me to overcome or fix what is going on that I am troubling with. She is also a great sport inspiration so if my team lost in a volleyball game, she would not bring us down about it, but only be proud that we did our best.
ReplyDelete2. 2 people in my life that I do not understand and need to work at being more understanding of them are, my step mom (Katie) and my biological mom. The steps i will take to become more understanding/tolerant of them and others are, with my stepmom I will be more helpful and making sure that i am doing everything that I am supposed to do around the house so I don't get into trouble. Also, I will make a better effort to be more understanding when something is bothering her and will try to be more loving. With my biological mom, I will become more understanding with her by, since I do not live with her we tend to talk on the phone or text a lot but I don't see her face to face very often throughout the year, but when we do talk/text sometimes I am not as loving to her as she is to me because I feel we never really had that kind of mother-daughter loving relationship because it is hard to be understanding/loving even when she has a problem with something she has done to herself, and then expects some kind of sympathy which I don't give to her because I know she is better than that. So, what I want to do to be more understanding not just with her personal life but just talking to her on the phone is, be more positive when she is doing ok and not worrying about all the bad things she has done and why she is still in this condition, just be happy that she is doing well now and is trying to get better. :)
3. I think understanding is important in relationships because, when you understand what someone is going through good or bad it makes that person have trust for them and their feelings. Sometimes it can take time to gain that trust for the other person to be truly understanding in a relationship as well. I think understanding in relationships or people being understanding in a relationship can cause less fighting between people and lets us bring out the best of who we really are and brings us closer together in the world.
4. This week something I will do to be more understanding of others is, be more considerate of people's opinions on things. I will try not to think of just myself in certain situations but others first. I will also try to be more humble if I get a good grade on a test and someone else got a worse grade instead of just being happy for myself and not caring how that other person feels.
My sister and my cousin Maddie are two people who understand me. They both made extreme efforts to try to understand what I went through and how it affected me. When I was mean or carb by they would ask me what was wrong and how I was feeling so they could try and help instead of just thinking of me as a brat.
ReplyDeleteI would like to try to understand my mom and my cousin AJ. Both are very different from me and I don’t make an effort to understand the way they feel. For my mom I will ask about how hard it is to raise a family and work everyday while managing to get us to practices. For my cousin I will try to do things he likes like video games and well more video games to try to connect with him.
To understand someone is to really know what they are going through. Once you know this you can help them and see it how they do. When you don’t understand you can be ignorant in a situation which can cause harm to those involved. So when you do get understand someone and their situation you are putting yourself in their shoes.
I and going to try to be someone people can talk to and ask about how others are doing. I want to know more about other people’s lived so I am not ignorant when talking to them. I would like to become someone who shows compassion as well as understanding.
1. Two people that understand me most are my golf coach and my mom. My golf coach understands that I have my days and that no one is perfect in the game of golf. He is always there to remind me to stay positive and never give up. My mom is always there for me whether it's my passions or just being there for a shoulder to cry on. I feel that one of the most special gifts God has given to us are our parents. There is no one who knows you and cares for you as much as them. My mom is so special to me and shows me she understands everyday by listening to me and teaching me that rights and wrongs in life.
ReplyDelete2. Two people I don't understand are Caroline (my sister) and some teachers. I think it is hard to always get along with your siblings, but you also have to love them which is very hard. I will try to get better at understanding her by listening to her and putting myself in her shoes. Some teachers are hard to understand because they always say one thing, but mean another! I really don't understand what they mean when they say something because I feel like nothing is ever good enough. But I do understand that it is hard to be a teacher and it is hard because everyone has bad days, but I don't understand when they complain about being a teacher when there is always someone who would love to have that opportunity to teach. I will try to understand them by putting myself in there shoes in certain situations.
3. Understanding is so important in a good relationship because if you don't fully understand each other, you can't talk to eachother or communicate well. I think about others and what they are feeling when they talk to me because I might have that same problem in my life. So before you can understand anyone, you have to understand yourself.
4.I will show others that I have learned what understanding really means. Because if we show others, they will hopefully follow their peers and do what’s right. We will come together to class if we learn to understand each other and we will do this by being honest with each other and opening up to people we trust.
ReplyDelete1.Two people that I think are understanding is my mom and my good friend Ainsley. My mom always knows when I am upset how to help and understands what I am going through. When I get a bad grade on something or don't do something right instead of getting overly upset with me she is understanding and tells me to really try harder to do better next time. My friend Ainsley is understanding because whenever I have a problem she always listens to what I have to say and never judges me for my actions or what I say.
2.Two people that I need more are two people in my class. I will take the time to understand what is going on in their life and not just instantly assume what is going on. I will also work hard to care less about the things they say that I think effect me and not care as much about what they say.
3.If you don't understand in a relationship it is hard for the other person to be themselves without feeling judged or like they have to be a different person. If both sides understand each other you can be more truthful but you can be more open about things going on in your life. If you understand you will have a true relationship.
4. Listen more to people and not assume things. Tell myself to put myself into their shoes and try to think of what it would be like more them and be more humble. Along with that also be open with everyone and try not to be fake or untrue.

ReplyDeleteTwo people in my life who are truly understanding toward me are my grandma and my uncle. My grandma is understanding because she knows how to make my day better. She can give me the right advice at the right time. My uncle because he will try to always go out to do stuff with me. He knows if I'm having trouble he knows how to help me solve it.
ReplyDeleteTwo people I don't understand are my brother and my mom. My brother because at times he likes to stay quiet and push everyone away but then at other times he is fun and talkative. I can try to understand him by trying to talk with him and figure out whats wrong. My mom likes to keep things to herself and act like nothing is wrong. I can try to understand her by giving her some time and let her tell me when she is ready rather then getting upset when she won't tell me.
Understanding is important in relationships because you can show others that they can trust you. If you show that you understand then they will know they can trust you. They can tell you things and know you will try to help and not judge them.
This week I will show I can be understanding of others by talking to them. If I see that they are sad I can talk with them and understand whats wrong. If I show that I am someone they can trust maybe I can help them more. I can not judge them if they are talking with. I'll understand where they are coming from and try to help them.
1. Two people that truly understand me are my mom and my best friend. Whenever I seem upset or sad, these two people truly understand what I'm going through. They also try their best to help me through whatever it is that I'm going through. I will continue to do that and I will also try to put myself in their shoes when I do make a mistake that affects them.
ReplyDelete2. Two people I truly don't understand are my sister, Gemma, and my sister, Gracie. They are very unorganized and they don't give me space when I need it. I sometimes try to understand them by asking them if somethings wrong when it seems wrong, giving them space, and trying my best to stay calm and be nice to them when they annoy me.
3. Understanding is important in relationships so that you can put yourself in their shoes and actually think about how they feel. In order to understand someone, you have to care for them, and love them. If you love someone, you should take the time to actually talk with them so that you understand them fully.
4. This week, I will have a conversation with someone so I can practice being more understanding towards others. I will show them that I understand by relating something in my life towards them. If someone is having a bad day, I will talk to them and do my best to try and help them get through whatever they are going through.
1) Two people I am understanding to are my Mom and my Dad. I am understanding to my Mom because she is always understanding me. She knows who I truly am and cares for me. The am understanding to my Dad because he is always there to help me and cheer me up. He is willing to help me and my family at any costs.
ReplyDelete2) I do not fully understand my older brother Luca and my younger brother Marco. I need to be more caring and patient with both of them. They can be mean, nice, fun, caring, and more but I will never know why, so that is why I need to be more understanding to them.
3) Understanding is so important in relationships because it is something everyone needs to have. You cannot see someone and instantly judge them by how they look or the mood they are in. You need to understand what they are going through. You never actually know how someone is feeling until you have gone through what they are going through.
4) I will truly listen to what the person I am talking to is saying. I will try and put myself in their shoes. I won't judge them on anything because even if you don't think anything is wrong with the person you are speaking to, on the inside they can be going through rough times.
1. Two people that truly understand me are my mom and my grandma. My mom understands me because when I get a bad grade or I am just not in a good mood she understands me and knows what to do to help me. My grandma understands me because she is really easy to talk to and give great advice when I don't know what to do.
ReplyDelete2. Two people I need to work on understanding are my cousin Aiden and my brother. I need to work on understanding both of them and listen to them even when I really do not want to. I also need to understand that Aiden has a different lifestyle than me.
3.Understanding is important in relationships because if you see something going on or if you are in an argument with someone you need to hear what's really going on or what their side of the story. Something else could be going on that you don't know about.
4. There are many ways I can show more understanding of others. One way I can that is by listening to others. When someone needs to talk I can be there for them and give them advise if they need it.
1. Two people that truly understand me are my mom and my grandpa. The way my mom understands me is she fully supports to anything and everything I do. The way my grandpa fully understands me is he can relate to some of the stuff that I have done
ReplyDelete2. Two people that I need to work on understanding better is my sister and my dad. The reason I do not fully understand her is because we don't talk that much even when we do we usually fight. The reason I don't understand my dad is we don't get along the best. The way I will try to understand them more is try to talk to them more.
3. The reason it is important to understand in relationships is so it can be stronger. If you don't understand in a relationship then you might fight a lot and you might not trust each other. That is why it is important to understand in a relationship.
4. This week I will try to talk to the people I don't understand. I will also try to be more nicer to them. That is what i will do to understand people better.
1. I think Abby Scholbe and Mia are truly understanding towards me. They both are there for me when I need them. They also know me very well and what happens in my life.
ReplyDelete2. I don't understand my brother and my Dad. I will try to be nicer. I will also give them more space when I am mad at them or they are mad at me.
3. I think understanding is very important in relationships. It is important because if you understand what's wrong or how they are feeling then you can put yourself in there shoes and try to figure out how they feel. They also might be more open to you.
4. I will try to be more understanding to people. I will try to give people more space. Also listen to what they have to say.
1. Two people in my life that are understanding towards me are Gavin and Anna. They understand certain things that I go through by relating to them. They can understand by listening to me and then telling me their problems. This makes certain connections and it helps me and them.
ReplyDelete2. Two people that I don't understand that are in my life are my dad, Robert Terry and my Cousin, Eli Stroh. I will understand my dad better by being with him more and talking to him more about my problems. This should help us grow a better bond towards each other. I will understand Eli better by understanding his problems better and understanding why he does certain things that hurts himself.
3. Understanding is important in relationships because it helps grow better connections and bonds between each other. If you guys don't talk and understand one another then you won't really know each other very well.
4. This week I will understand others by talking to people that I don't understand very well. I will try to grow connections with others. I will also help other people that I don't help out very often when they need help.
1) The people who truly understand me are my stepmom and my dad. My stepmom is truly understanding of me because she knows basically all my secrets and I don't feel worried when I open up to her. The long car rides home from school is when we can just talk and I love those times because I can get everything off my chest that I need to. My dad is truly understanding because I tell him my troubles and he listens and gives me advice or is even just there when I need him. He is truly comforting and I am so happy to have him as a father.
ReplyDelete2) I believe that I need to understand my brothers, but they need to understand me more. Instead, of fighting, we could both apologize and hug it out. I need to work on when they say something or do something that makes me mad, rather then snapping back, just say I don't like it when you talk to me that way and I know you wouldn't like it if I was talking to you that way so please stop, or something like that.
3) Understanding is so important in a relationship because if you want to be with someone all the time and you get made when they don't have time to, we need to realize, they have a life outside of our relationship and that they have other relationships. They can't be there all the time and you need to get that, sometimes they may just not want to talk to you right now and they need a break. We need to know that there are going to be somethings that we just have to say okay, because we still get to be friends with that person, we just have to respect their boundaries.
4) I will show this week that I can be more understanding by, if a person says they can't do something a way I want then I just have to say "okay". I need to realize that I'm not the narrator of everyone's life, God is. Usually I do a good job and respect their boundaries but I need to make sure to do it every time a circumstance like that happens.
Two people that are understanding towards me are my friends Luca and Luke. I am able to talk to Luca and make jokes and we each make fun of each other and he understands me. My other friend Luke I've known for a long time, I've always been able to talk to him about stuff that's happening and hes always been in my life and a person to talk to and joke around with.
ReplyDeleteTwo people that are in my life that I don't understand are my brother Joey and my dad. My brother sometimes does things that I don't think are normal but I just need to understand that that is him and his personality. My dad on the other hand sometimes makes me do things I don't like and things I don't want to do, but I need to be better at realizing that hes my dad and he can tell me to do those things.
Understanding is really important in a relationship. You have to know how the other person is feeling if they are mad, sad, or happy. You have to know when its okay to do things and when its not okay to do things. You have to known what they are comfortable with and what they aren't comfortable with.
What I will do this week to be more understanding of others is realize that I don't know everything that's happening in everybody life. I don't know what their family situation is like. I don't know what their situation is outside of school.
1.Two people that are truly understanding of me are Gianna and Caty Jane. They are really understanding towards me because they have been in situations that are similar to mine,so they know how it feels. They both are always going the extra step to help me get through these hard times. Thanks to them and my family of course, I always know there are people that I can tell anything to, and get help or advice from.
ReplyDelete2.Two people I need to be more understanding of are my little sister and some teachers. I sometimes get very frustrated at my sister because she started to learn how to push my buttons. When this happens I get very mad and try to aggravate her back. I know she is only two and that is what she is supposed to do. The steps I will use to understand her better is to be more patient with her. I need to stop and think that she is only two and does not know right from wrong. I need to understand some teachers more because, I have to realize that they have their own lives and problems that they are facing at home. I think a lot of people forget about this. What i'm going to do moving forward, is that when a teacher is not having the best of days,I am going to stop and think that their might be something bad going on in there life.
3. Understanding is important in a relationship because if someone isn’t feeling well emotionally, you have to truly take time and understand what they are going through. If you don’t do that then you are not a true friend to them. You need to understand that people's emotions are different, and you need to take time to understand their emotions. Cause they could be so much more different than yours.
4. What I will do this week to understand people more is to talk to people that aren’t in my friend group. I can take time out of my day and talk to them; see how they are doing and if they need any help with anything. This is important for me to do because, if that person doesn’t have many friends it can make their day or even give them more self love for themselves.
1. The two people who truly understand me are my friend Patrick and my grandma. Patrick will always understand me no matter what it is. My grandma always helps me up when I’m down and leads me back to Jesus.
ReplyDelete2. Two people I need to understand more are my sister and my dad. My sister is always mad and I need to understand what makes her so mad sometimes. I need to understand my dad more and find out his personality.
3. It is important to understand in a relationship because you will never know why or what made your partner mad, or sad. If you don’t understand them you will never know who they really are. If you understand them then you can respect them more, and no what you can talk about and what not to talk about.
4. I will try to be nice to everyone and understand everyone. I will talk to everyone, not just my friends. I will try to listen to everyone before I judge them. That is what I will do to understand everyone more.
1) 2 people who truly understand me are my brother and one of my friends, Izzy. Due to Julian and I being related, we tell each other everything and we're easily able to sympathize with one another and we have the same views on a lot of things. Izzy, one of my friends from NY is someone I met quite recently. Izzy is always to console me through my frustrations and hardships no matter the importance and she's supportive of my actions, as I am with hers
ReplyDelete2) 2 people I am generally intolerant of are Kate and a person in this class who shall not be named. Kate isn't a bad person, but for some reason whenever I hang around her for awhile my mood just starts to gradually drop for literally no reason. I'm aware that most of the time she's joking but she always manages to wear my patience extremely thin. To fix this, I'll try to joke back with her more and be more tolerant. Person who shall not be named is able to piss me off in any setting, I find them annoying and ignorant and have publicly announced my hate for this person. I literally have no idea how I can fix this issue, I just know that I'll need a lot of willpower.
3) Understanding in any relationship is important because it plays into communication, the center of all relationships. You need to be able to talk to the person and avoid issues through communication and understanding. Through these things, the chance of arguments will lessen.
4) In order to understand those around me more, I will try to think as they do, and think of why they act and react the way they do before I judge or make assumptions. I will attempt to be more tolerant and keep my temper in check so that I don't feel like I'm about to run someone over
1. Two people that are truly understanding of me are Emma and my friend Abby Collora. They are understanding towards me because they get me and they know when I am upset and when I am happy. They know what I go through on a daily basis, and they have experienced some of the stuff I have went through. They were there for me when I was in a bad place this summer, and when I lost someone very important in my life this summer. I thank them everyday that they are there for me, and that they love me for who I am.
ReplyDelete2.Two people I need to be more understanding of are my mom and my dad. My mom always has a thousand questions and I never really understood why, and I should try to let her ask the questions and see where she is coming from before I get mad at her. my dad can sometime let his temper take over, and he wont think before he speaks and he says really hurtful things to me, but I know that sometimes I am the one who makes him made and I never understand why he says what he says to me until he calms down and tell me. Sometimes I get mad at them and I scream and yell at them even though they are just trying to do what is right for me. Next time this happens I am going to take a deep breathe and here them out and here what they have to say before i go off the handle.
3. Understanding is important in a relationship because if you understand one another then you will know when something isn't right, and you can try to help them. Understanding is also important for when someone is emotionally hurt, so you can understand where they are coming from and make the time for them, so that they know someone is there for them.
4. What I will do this week to show that I can be more understanding to other, is I will make the time to listen to others and to comfort them when they need. I will keep calm when my parents get mad at me. I will take deep breathes when people get me mad, because you never know what they are going through at home, and last I will listen to what people have to say, so that they know someone is there for them.
Two people that are understanding towards me is my Mom and Dad. They are understanding because they are my parents and they care about me. They always have my back even in rough times and I love them for that.
ReplyDeleteI need to work at being more understanding toward my sisters. They get on my nerves a lot but I still love them. Next time they get on my nerves I'll take a deep breath and try to ignore them. If they want to talk to me, I'll listen to them and have a conversation with them.
Understanding is so important in relationships because if you don't understand the other person, then you don't understand their feelings. You need to understand the other person if you want to be a good friend. Caring about your friend is what friendships are about. You need to be a friend in order to have friends.
To understand others, I'll try to put myself in their shoes to understand what they are going though. I'll listen to others when they need someone to vent to. I'll help others and do good deeds to help them if they are going through a rough time.
1. I don't know anyone that is understanding to me, mainly because I don't share my emotions.
ReplyDelete2. I don't Know of anyone that I need to understand because none of my friends share their emotions.
3. it is important to understand in relationships so that it doesn't lead to any conflict. if you understand your partner you will be better in the relationship.
4. i will listen to others when they need help or when they have something to explain
Two people that understand me are my Mom and my Dad. Whenever I need something I can always go to them. They are always there for me no matter what, even if something bad is going on they will still be there for me.
ReplyDeleteTwo people that need to understand me more are my some of my friends. I'm not going to say names for reasons, but some people only know about my real life and sometimes I have wanted to trust them but its just hard. The only reason i won't tell people is because i don't want them thinking of me different.
It is important to understand in relationships because it's all about trust. If your in a relationship and you can't trust each other then it isn't a good relationship. If you understand each other and trust each other then it'll all be ok.
I will go around helping people and understanding them. If I don't help people or if I don't understand them then there won't be a point to talk to them. I will go around spreading positivity and no negative terms will anyone.
1. My Dad and my friend Kai because both have pretty similar personalitys to mine. My dad understands me in the way that I don't have that great of social skills. And Kia understands me in the way that we both make the same mistakes and have the same thought process.
ReplyDelete2. My Mom and sister are the ones I need to be more understanding of.
